Juliana Balsewicz

How many years have you been in the company?

I have been in the company for 3 years.

How many years have you been choreographing?

This is my first year choreographing and I am so excited!

What is your piece about this year?

This year, my dance is about depression and our safety net (our loved ones and people) around us.

How have COVID-19 restrictions affected your choreography?

Well, I wanted to do a lot of throwing people in the air and lifting, but I could not do that due to COVID restrictions.

How does your choreography connect to our theme? “Moving together while being apart”?

Yes it does, but it’s a little different. It’s similar because people always move together but their feelings and emotions can get mixed up and move to a different pace than others.

What is your piece about this year?

This year my piece is about how we all have that one person in our life that picks up us when we are down and replace a frown with a smile

How have COVID-19 restrictions affected your choreography?

COVID-19 has played a huge role in my choreography this year. In my piece, I was really looking forward to exploring more weight sharing and partner work. With the new restrictions, I had to find a way to show the connection between two people without actual connection.

How does your choreography connect to our theme? “Moving together while being apart”?

My piece does connect to this years theme. The two dancers are moving forward together with there friendship without being able to physically be there for each other. Eye contact has become a huge part in my choreography. It is showing us that they still care for each other and are still there for each other without touching.

Ella Dubiel

How many years have you been in the company?

This is my second year in the company.

How many years have you been choreographing?

This is my first year choreographing.

What is your dance about this year?

This year, my dance is based around the theme of simplicity amongst chaos. I find it important to look back on all that we have accomplished during the craziness of our day to day lives, and reflect on our experiences.

How have COVID-19 restrictions affected your choreography? If any?

COVID-19 restrictions have definitely played a huge role in my choreography throughout my dance. Not being able to have the element of connection and touch in my piece has made it harder to convey the message of togetherness through rough circumstances, such as the past 10 months living with the pandemic.

How does your choreography connect with our theme? “Moving together while being apart.”

Yes! Without being able to do partner work in my piece, I decided to present my theme as if each of my dancers are “living in their own world” so to speak, and having separate experiences that all have a common ground based off the theme of my dance. I expressed this through separate solo parts all throughout my dance, and matching the intensity of their movement to the musicality of my song choice.

My dance this year is based off of the idea of  finding a safe haven through dance.

How have COVID-19 restrictions affected your choreography? If any?

Due to COVID-19 , it was hard choreographing without partner work.

How does your choreography connect with our theme? “Moving together while being apart.”

My dance connects to our theme because it’s expressing the idea of dance always being someone’s safe place . No matter how far apart we all are, we will always have dance to come back to when we need it most.

How many years have you been in the company?

This is my sixth year in the company!

How many years have you been choreographing?

This is my third year choreographing!

What is your dance about this year?

My dance this year is in memory of my grandmother, who passed away due to COVID-19. This dance represents our relationship that still continues after she is gone.

How have COVID restrictions affected your choreography? If any?

It doesn’t really affect my choreography because I wasn’t going to do any partner work. One dancer, MaryKate, represents my grandmother from heaven and the the younger dancer, Adelaide, is just feeling her presence as she gets watched over. My grandmother is like my guardian angel.

Does your choreography connect with our theme? “Moving together while being apart.”

Yes it does, because my grandma and I are moving together but in separate places, her in heaven and me on earth.

I hope you enjoy!

1. How many years have you been in the company?

I have been in the company for 4 years.

2. How many years have you been choreographing?

This is my 3rd year choreographing.

3. What is your dance about this year?

This year my piece is about stars and constellations. It shows how individual they are but together the stars make pretty shapes, such as constellations. Stars are so different and similar at the same time.

4. How have COVID restrictions affected your choreography? If any?

It is really hard choreographing with a global pandemic. Especially having a large cast like I do. I’ve been working around this by using depth to make the illusion that the dancers are closer. I’ve also used smaller groups in my choreography on stage at a time.

5. Does your choreography connect with our theme? “Moving together while being apart.”

I believe my dance connects with this theme because stars are apart, they never actually touch. Though they still make beautiful shapes in the sky together.

3. What is your dance about this year?

My dance is about the inner workings of one person and the different aspects of ones personality. It’s their thoughts, feelings, actions, emotions, etc, all of it, but it’s all connected to make up who we are.

4. How have COVID restrictions affected your choreography? If any?

I do wish my dancers could touch, but they can’t so they are spaced out and form different formations.

5. Does your choreography connect with our theme? “Moving together while being apart.”

Kind of. All the functions of any person move and work together while still doing their separate things apart.

Choreographer Spotlight 2020-2021: Juliet!

How many years have you been in the company?

I have been in the company for 6 years!

How many years have you been choreographing?

This is my 4th year choreographing.

What is your dance about this year?

My dance is about feeling like you are being forced to do something everyday, and you want escape but can’t.

How have COVID restrictions affected your choreography? If any?

I do a lot of partnering usually, in my dances, so I needed to learn to get around that.

Does your choreography connect with our theme? “Moving together while being apart.”

It does connect to the theme a little but as my dancers are apart during my piece. I had to adapt, and learn how to make the piece interesting while keeping all of my dancers apart.

Choreographer Spotlight 2020-2021 MaryKate!

MaryKate Frassinelli

How many years have you been in the company?

I have been in the company for 9 years!

How many years have you been choreographing?

This is my 5th year choreographing.

What is your dance about this year?

My dance is about self discovery and personal improvement. I’ve always identified myself with personality traits and qualities people describe me with. I’ve always felt a pressure to reach the expectations others have of me. In this new chapter of my life, I am ready to truly let go, and discover my own true identity and embrace who I am.

How have COVID restrictions affected your choreography? If any?

With COVID restrictions, there can’t be any physical contact and dancers have to be spread at least 6 feet apart. Not being able to use partner work with both weight sharing and physical touch has been challenging, but it has also allowed me to figure out new ways of choreographing and to also use the whole space of the studio.

Does your choreography connect with our theme? “Moving together while being apart.”

The concept of my piece relates to the theme of “Moving together while being apart”, because although I am figuring out my own identity, it has always been the people around me who made me who I am today. They will always be a part of my life, we’re still together even while I’m growing into my own person.
